The New Age Pigeons
It’s a common sight in most historical epics, a minister or a soldier looking far into the horizon, waiting for a pigeon to come from the other side with a message tied to its delicate legs. This sight might soon repeat itself in the near future, except that the people would be expecting drones rather than pigeons and the delivery products instead of the chit messages. Amazon has recently unveiled its Prime Air delivery drone, a hybrid aircraft capable of vertical and forward flight which is expected to start functioning very soon. Jeff Wilke, the CEO of Amazon’s Consumer Worldwide has recently given out an interview on how these drones are safe and robust, comparing it to the stability and safety of an aircraft. These drones are equipped with thermal cameras, depth cameras, and sonar cameras to detect hazards. Additionally, they are also backed by machine learning models and built-in computers that can inherently identify obstacles and navigate around them. Addressing the doubts around the physical constraints of the drone, the drone’s height coverage is expected to be 15 miles and weight carrying capacity is expected to be five pounds. The company claims that about 85 percent of the orders fall under this payload and hence is confident about the efficiency of the product. Can one expect this transition from age-old period dramas to postmodern sci-fi world prove to be more beneficial to humans? One can only hope to find out by looking up to the skies with a heart filled with faith.
